Dayna running the Vancouver Marathon, en route to a new course record in 2023.
Who is Dayna in one sentence?
At this point in my life I’d say I’m chasing my best on the marathon course while enjoying exploring new food and new places.
Where are you from, and how long have you been in Vancouver?
I grew up in Tecumseh, just outside Windsor, Ontario and moved out here with my now husband just over 12 years ago. We quickly fell in love with the milder winters, always-green forests, and all around beauty.
What’s one food or drink spot in the city you keep going back to?
Probably Their There. Hard to pivot past the chicken and pancakes and of course you must grab a cheeky dough to go. The brown butter mochi donut is my personal fave.
What are three things we’d find you doing on a Saturday?
Usually a run around Pacific Spirit Park or the surrounding neighbourhood, a cycle (often indoors), and some strategic lounging so I’m ready to crush Sunday’s long run session. Peak endurance-athlete glamour.
What’s something you’re focused on or excited about in your life right now?
Currently I’m very locked in for an upcoming marathon (end of March) and hoping I’ll be able to double back for the Vancouver Marathon in May (it’s just so fun). I’m feeling fit and healthy and that’s motivating as I try to target a new personal best. Over the next few weeks it’s all about working hard and recovering hard!
Something in the city more people should know about?
Everyone talks about the seawall and yes, it is gorgeous, but if you can head into Pacific Spirit Park on a rainy day or one of those days the sun is poking through the moss-covered trees, I guarantee your day will be made.
What advice would you give someone training for their first marathon?
Don’t do it! Just kidding. Some of the major tips I can think of are to have a fuelling plan that you have practiced in training, don’t try anything new on race day (including the shoes), and have a purpose — because that purpose is what is going to get you past 30K to the finish line!
If you could share a message with everyone in Vancouver, what would you say?
Smile more! I love sharing a smile or hello with fellow walkers and runners out there. Even on the rainiest and gloomiest of days this city is magical and sharing a moment of gratitude with a stranger is such a treat. 😊
